JSC May Shabbat 2026. A Harriet Tubman Reenactment

Program: This May, join us for a powerful Shabbat featuring a live reenactment of Harriet Tubman. Born into slavery, Tubman escaped and went on to lead dozens of enslaved people to freedom through the Underground Railroad, later serving as a Union spy and nurse during the Civil War. Experiencing her story through reenactment brings history into the room allowing us to witness the courage, faith, and moral conviction that helped spark national change and continues to challenge us today.

Eddie Murphy brings Harriet Tubman radiantly back to life for audiences throughout the country in this reenactment of her selflessness and her courage as she changed the nation forever. Harriet Tubman (1822-1913) is an important figure in African American and the nation's history. She was heralded for escorting many slaves from bondage to freedom, her life had many riveting facets.

Speaker: Eddie Murphy is a native of Wellsville, Ohio. Ten years ago, Eddie returned to her beloved village of Wellsville after residing in Southern California for nearly 4 decades.  While there, she had successful careers with both Hughes Aircraft Company and UCLA where she was the overseer of retirees for both employers.  Currently, she is the president of the Wellsville Community Foundation-endeavoring to make a difference for the community at large.

Her research about Harriet Tubman and the development of this portrayal was a gift to her sister Gwen.  She considers it a great honor to share Harriet’s life story with you. 

Food: The JSC will host an Oneg Shabbat. The Mandel JCC is a kosher facility and does not allow outside non-kosher food, plates, cups, or serving utensils. Join us for an engaging evening!

As you pull into the driveway, follow the signs for Stonehill Auditorium which is on the left side of the building, past the Early Childhood Entrance. Park in the lot on the left across from the entrance. Security Provided by the Mandel Jewish Community Center.
