Program: Never Again Means Now: The Age of the “American Pogrom” The Age of the American Pogrom
Join us for an urgent discussion on civil rights, justice, and human rights in modern America. Drawing on years of frontline experience fighting for asylum seekers and vulnerable populations, civil rights advocate Brian Hoffman examines contemporary threats to targeted immigrant communities and what "Never Again" means in our current landscape. Brian Hoffman will draw upon the historical concept of the pogrom—traditionally associated with mob violence against Jewish communities—to examine modern threats, scapegoating, and violence directed at immigrant and asylum-seeking communities in America today.
Speaker: Brian Hoffman is an attorney, civil rights advocate, and farmer from Wooster, Ohio. A graduate of The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, Brian previously served in the office of Governor Ted Strickland before founding pro bono legal initiatives with the Southern Poverty Law Center and establishing the Ohio Center for Strategic Immigration Litigation & Outreach. His human rights work has been featured in The Guardian, The New York Times, and The Los Angeles Times.
Food: The JSC will host an OnegShabbat with Hanukkah treats! The Mandel JCC is a kosher facility and does not allow outside non-kosher food, plates, cups, or serving utensils. Join us for an engaging evening!
JSC Guest Policy: We love having guests join us! Guests are welcome to attend two complimentary events (lifetime). After that, the fee is $20.00 per Shabbat. Fees paid may be credited towards an annual JSC membership. Learn More Today!
Directions: Enter the JCC campus from S. Woodland. Rd. As you pull into the driveway, follow the signs for Stonehill Auditorium which is on the left side of the building, past the Early Childhood Entrance. Park in the lot on the left across from the entrance. Security provided by JFC Security, LLC, security provider for the Jewish Federation of Cleveland.
