Community Service: Tikkun Olam
The Jewish Secular Community honors the enduring Jewish tradition of tikkun olam (“repair of the world”) by its programs of community service, Judaism historically having valued righteous action over belief. The ideal of social integration and the practical benefit of personal involvement join here, and you can take part. By helping others one finds the largest dimensions of the community and discovers skills one is unaware of, or which have laid dormant over a period of years.
We have assisted in stocking food banks, comforting the elderly, helping beautify the Hebrew Gardens in the University Circle area, cleaning up the Chesed Shel Emeth & Ridge Road #2 Cemeteries, collecting clothing, toys, books, and other items for the young and other needy, and many more activities as well.
One serves the greater self by serving more than the individual self. To quote Hillel, “if I am only for myself, what am I ?"
Upcoming Community Service Opportunities
We are looking for more volunteers to join the several JSCers who have already volunteered to work at the Cleveland Food Bank on Thursday,
October 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. They will help sort and repack nonperishable food that is later distributed to local food pantries, soup kitchens, and
shelters.
